Locksmith in Ancaster HeightsRekey. Repair.
Replace, if it needs it.

Most locks in Ancaster Heights do not need replacing. They need new pins, a clean cylinder, or a strike moved a few millimetres so the bolt stops fighting the frame. We start with the least invasive fix, say plainly what we see, and only move up the list when the hardware has truly reached the end of its life.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 61 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Period hardware on older homes deserves matching parts, not a mismatched modern set. A locksmith who works among such houses keeps finishes and styles that suit them, so a repaired or replaced lock still looks like it belongs to the door.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census). In mixed neighbourhoods, a family may move from an apartment to a house or the other way around. A locksmith who knows both kinds of door can rekey the old place for the next occupant and set up the new one on the same visit.

The call
It is ten to nine, three staff are on the sidewalk with their coffees, and the key that has opened the glass front door for six years will not turn. The cylinder feels gritty, the door is locked, and the first customer is already parking.

There are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you can switch off.

High Security Locks

Deadbolts differ in how far the bolt travels, how hard the bolt is, whether the cylinder guard spins free under a wrench and whether the housing shrugs off a hammer. High security deadbolts do well on all four, and we can show you the difference in hand.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You jiggle the key a little and the old deadbolt opens even when the cut does not look quite right. If your worn key can do that, you wonder what a stranger with the right tools could do.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The lever on the side door droops toward the floor and rattles in your hand. The latch no longer springs back on its own, so the door drifts open behind you unless you pull it shut and check it twice.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

Someone tried the door last winter. The frame took it, but the strike plate is bent, one screw hole is stripped, and the bolt sits in the pocket at a slight angle.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The back door looks closed until you touch it. The edge is crushed where a bar went in, the latch is bent sideways, and the door swings free with a gentle push no matter how you turn the key.

Your questions, our answers

Can you open a door that has a push bar on the inside?

Yes. From outside, an exit device is operated through its trim, which may be a keyed lever, a pull with a cylinder or a bare rim cylinder. Depending on the trim fitted, picking or decoding that cylinder either retracts the latch directly or unlocks a lever, knob or thumbpiece that then has to be turned to let the latch go. The bar, rods and dogging feature stay as installed for the emergency way out, and the bar is pressed afterward to confirm it releases the latch with one push.

What is a security strike box and why fit one?

A security strike is a heavier plate with a formed steel pocket that wraps around the bolt instead of leaving it in bare wood. It is set into the jamb and fixed with long screws, typically three inches, that pass through the jamb and the shim space into the framing, with the longest screws placed nearest the door stop where the bolt bears. Manufacturers specify the pocket depth so the bolt extends fully. The result spreads a kick across the wall stud rather than two small screws.

Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?

Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead.

Will a smart lock fit my existing door?

Most residential doors have the standard preparation these locks are designed around: a large hole for the lock body, a smaller one in the edge for the bolt, and a thickness between roughly 35 and 45 millimetres. The locksmith measures all three plus the backset before recommending a model. Thicker doors take an extension kit, thin or glass-panelled doors and older doors with a mortise pocket call for a particular model or some preparation, and all of that is sorted out before the box is opened.
