We plan visits around how people in Pinecrest live. A shop wants the work done before opening or after close. A family wants a time when someone is home and the dog is put away. A landlord wants the unit done between tenants. Tell us the window that suits you and we build the day around it, then call when the van is on its way.

Shop rules
Getting you back inside, gently.
- A look before a verdict. We inspect the door, frame and lock before suggesting anything. Diagnosing from the driveway is how people end up with parts they did not need.
- Two or three real choices. Where there are sensible alternatives we explain them side by side, including the option of doing less than you expected.
- The job finished properly. Tested, aligned, cleaned up and demonstrated. We do not consider a lock done until you have turned the key yourself.
- Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call and tell us about the door.

How a visit goes
Many of our visits end without a new lock being sold, and we consider those good visits. A cylinder cleaned and re-lubricated, a strike shimmed, a hinge screw tightened, a key cut fresh from code: small work that makes a door feel new again.

Step 1 of 5
Call and describe the door
Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

Step 2 of 5
On our way
You tell us what is happening with the door, who has keys and what you would like to be different afterwards. We ask a few questions so we arrive with the right parts.

2021 census: what it means at the door
Every square is one home in a hundred.
- 61 in 100 homes · older homes
- 56 in 100 homes · mixed housing
- About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Older homes tend to have had many hands on their doors: owners, tenants, tradespeople, family. A locksmith visiting such a house pays attention to who holds keys now, and rekeying or a keyed-alike set often matters more than any new hardware.
- Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census). In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.

Your questions, our answers
Can you open a door that has a push bar on the inside?
Yes. From outside, an exit device is operated through its trim, which may be a keyed lever, a pull with a cylinder or a bare rim cylinder. Depending on the trim fitted, picking or decoding that cylinder either retracts the latch directly or unlocks a lever, knob or thumbpiece that then has to be turned to let the latch go. The bar, rods and dogging feature stay as installed for the emergency way out, and the bar is pressed afterward to confirm it releases the latch with one push.
Do the old keys really stop working?
Yes, at every cylinder that was rekeyed. Once the bottom pins are changed, a key cut to the old combination lifts them to the wrong heights and the plug will not turn. The locksmith proves this at each door by trying the old key after the new one, because any door missed from the list would still answer to the old key. That is also why the walk around the property at the start matters: every door meant to be included has to be on the list.
How long should the bolt be?
The bolt should extend at least 25 mm into the frame, which is the standard throw for a dwelling's entrance doors and the length most residential deadbolts provide. Part of the bolt stays inside the door for support while the rest sits in the pocket. A hardened steel insert that spins under a saw blade is a common feature worth having on doors that face a street or laneway.
Do I need to prove the mailbox is mine before you change the lock?
Yes, and it takes only a moment. For a house or a standalone box, an address match usually settles it. For one compartment in a shared building panel, a lease, a deed, a unit number matching the building's own records, or confirmation from the property manager does the job. This step protects every household on the same panel, including whoever calls next.
