Locksmith in NakomaSecure the frame,
not only the lock

Doors in Nakoma usually give at the frame long before the lock fails. A reinforced strike, longer screws into the stud and a properly set deadbolt do more than a new cylinder alone. We look at the whole door edge, then recommend the upgrade that actually raises the bar.

For a household in Nakoma the common requests are a rekey after moving in, a lockout, a deadbolt that grinds, and a lock that finally needs replacing. For a business they are storefront hardware, staff key control and exit devices. Both lists, and a few less common jobs, are laid out here.

Winter is part of how we work in Nakoma. Doors swell and shrink, frames shift, keys snap in cold cylinders, and salt finds its way into hardware. We choose lubricants that stay fluid in the cold, set strikes with the seasons in mind, and show you the small habit that stops a key from freezing in the lock.

Shop rules

Getting you back inside, gently.

  1. A look before a verdict. We inspect the door, frame and lock before suggesting anything. Diagnosing from the driveway is how people end up with parts they did not need.
  2. Two or three real choices. Where there are sensible alternatives we explain them side by side, including the option of doing less than you expected.
  3. The job finished properly. Tested, aligned, cleaned up and demonstrated. We do not consider a lock done until you have turned the key yourself.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call and tell us about the door.

How a visit goes

Many of our visits end without a new lock being sold, and we consider those good visits. A cylinder cleaned and re-lubricated, a strike shimmed, a hinge screw tightened, a key cut fresh from code: small work that makes a door feel new again.

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    On our way

You tell us what is happening with the door, who has keys and what you would like to be different afterwards. We ask a few questions so we arrive with the right parts.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 61 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Old brass keys wear thin, and a key that has bent for years finally lets go in a cold cylinder. In older housing stock this is a regular call, so the locksmith is ready to extract the piece, check the cylinder and cut a new key from the code.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.

Your questions, our answers

Can you also open a storm door, garage side door or backyard gate?

Yes. The same skills apply to any residential lock: a storm door that self-latched on the porch, the man-door into the garage, a shed, a gate with a padlock or a keyed latch, and a mailbox or storage locker in a condo building. Tell the locksmith about every opening involved so the right tools are in the van. Several small locks opened in one visit is common, especially after a move when keys were never handed over.

Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?

Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead.

What about the mailbox key?

It depends on whose mailbox it is. A private box at your door or on your post is yours, and its small cylinder can be rekeyed or replaced in the same visit. A compartment in a community mailbox or an apartment mailroom belongs to the postal service or the building, which handles lost-key lock changes through its own process. The locksmith will tell you which you have and who to call.

Do I have to prove I own the home before you change a lock?

The locksmith will ask, and it is a sign of a careful trade. Photo identification with the address, a deed or property tax notice, or a mortgage or insurance document is plenty for an owner. Tenants show a lease and the landlord's consent; landlords show ownership and confirm the tenant will receive keys. It is a short step that protects everyone with a right to that door.
